A man from Bavaria has been sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of attempted murder on Thursday for trying to poison his wife with a cinnamon roll.

Death by cinnamon roll

On Thursday, a 39-year-old man from Bavaria was sentenced to six years and three months in prison for the poisoning of his wife and her mother. The man, who works as an IT technician, admitted to adding sleeping pills into a homemade cinnamon roll which he then served to his wife. The two were separated and the man claimed he served the poisoned roll as a way to extend his visitation time with his son.

A toxicology report found that the cinnamon roll contained enough sleeping pills to be considered lethal. It has been reported that the woman survived because she only ate half of the sugary treat. Both the woman and her mother, who also ate part of the roll, were treated at a local hospital. The mother almost died as a result of the poisoning and had to be put on an artificial respirator.

The Nuremberg District Court rejected the man’s claim that he only wanted to temporarily incapacitate the woman, with the judge saying that he should have been aware that his actions could have killed her and that in leaving her, he had accepted that she could die. The judge, therefore, ignored the defendant’s plea for a light sentence and sentenced the man to six years and three months in prison.

While the man’s lawyers tried to argue that the man be charged with the lesser offence of grievous bodily harm, prosecutors asked that the man, who was found to be psychologically unstable and battling drug addiction, be sentenced to nine years for attempted murder. The man was eventually convicted of both offences, as well as for possession of narcotics. The man has also been ordered to attend drug rehabilitation before serving his sentence.
