Smoking woman sets Berlin S-Bahn alight
Police in Berlin arrested a 63-year-old woman for aggravated arson after she lit a cigarette onboard an S-Bahn train which promptly went up in flames.
The cigarette set two upholstered seating areas and part of the train roof alight near Bellevue station in Berlin-Mitte.
120 passengers were evacuated from the train and 30 vehicles brought 90 emergency services workers to the scene.
Cigarette fire causes transport disruption
Luckily, no passengers were harmed during the fire, but S-Bahn staff were treated for smoke inhalation.
The fire, which began in the morning, led to widespread transport disruption in central Berlin, with the city’s arterial S-Bahn line seeing delays into the afternoon.
