Police have raided a pizzeria in Düsseldorf which was delivering cocaine to customers who ordered the elusive “Pizza number 40”.

Police in Düsseldorf arrested a 36-year-old pizzeria owner after it was discovered that the restaurant was delivering cocaine to customers.

If customers ordered the “Pizza number 40” they would receive a pizza and cocaine in place of accompanying breadsticks or a salad. “That was one of the best-selling pizzas,” a police officer said in a statement given to the dpa.

Drugs “fell right into police’s hands”

When police showed up at the pizzeria to arrest the restaurant owner, who had no previous criminal record, the man attempted to get rid of a bag of drugs quickly by throwing it out the window, without realising the police were directly below. The stash “fell right into police's hands,” the police spokesperson said.

The man was arrested and discharged two days later when he promptly began re-selling the customer favourite, pizza number 40. New sales helped police trace a greater supply chain.

Eventually, an operation involving 150 police officers led to 15 people being arrested and 1,6 kilograms of cocaine, 400 grams of cannabis and 268.000 euros being taken by police.
