New York Times names Dresden as top destination for 2024
The capital of Saxony is having its moment in the spotlight - Dresden has been selected for The New York Times’ Places to Go list for 2024.
Dresden is the place to go in 2024
Need some inspiration for your next holiday? The New York Times may have the primer you require with its 52 Places to Go list for 2024. It’s quite the eclectic mix, with vibrant Singapore and historic Vienna being joined by the likes of Baltimore, Dominica, the Albanian Alps, Almaty and Manchester.
But one of the top tips is just on our doorsteps, Dresden. The city was selected with a special focus on “revitalisation”, a recognition given based on recent projects to restore Dresden Castle to mark the 300th anniversary of its construction. The city isn’t the only one in Saxony to have been highlighted for a travel top tip in 2024, with Booking.com recently naming Chemnitz as an “under-the-radar” destination for this year.
NYT spotlights Dresden events celebrating Caspar David Friedrich
Fast approaching is the 250 years since the birth of one of Germany’s most famous Romantic painters, Caspar David Friedrich. And while celebrations and special exhibitions are scheduled to take place across the country, the NYT told tourists to head to Dresden - where Friedrich lived for over 40 years - if they wanted to “fete a favourite son” of the Romantic movement in a serious way.
The city is planning a constellation of events throughout the year, including an exhibition at the Albertinum and Kupferstich-Kabinett museums and hikes across Dresden’s Elbland, following in the footsteps of the great Romantic.
