Christmas S-Bahn returns to Berlin after 15-year hiatus

Berlin’s Christmas-themed, vintage S-Bahn has hit the tracks in the capital after a 15-year break due to a lack of funds. Tickets are going fast for what could be the trip of a lifetime.

Berlin welcomes back Christmas S-Bahn train line

Never mind the Polar Express, here comes the Christmas S-Bahn all covered in tinsel.

After being removed from the tracks for 15 years thanks to a lack of funds at the local transport association, Berlin’s Weihnachtszüge are back. From December 2, locals and visitors to the German city can take a ride during the remaining advent weekends.

Passengers will be able to hop on to one of the 1920s and 1930s vintage S-Bahns at Grünau, with two departures planned for Saturdays and Sundays, one leaving at 1.10 pm and the other at 3.50 pm. Tickets will set you back 21 euros for an adult and 7 euros for a child.

The ride with take the Christmas spirit up through Neukölln and Südkreuz, then moving west to Charlottenburg before heading back to Grünau to drop everyone back off. But beware, once you’re on the Weihnachtszug, it is not easy to escape, with disembarking only permitted at Grünau.

Berlin Weihnachtszug passengers get Glühwein and Stollen

Since it's a long journey around Berlin, passengers will be able to dine on board, but only Christmas-related food will be available. Glühwein and Stollen will be the staples, but don’t get too merry because there isn’t a toilet.

There are still tickets available for additional journeys on December 16 and 23, but keep a beady eye out for when they appear, because they are going like hot Plätzchen.
