Passengers should prepare for another day of cancellations and delays at several German airports on Tuesday, after the trade union ver.di called a second warning strike for security staff. 

Major disruption as security workers strike at German airports

People travelling through two of the largest airports in Germany - Frankfurt and Munich - as well as Hamburg, Stuttgart, and Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden will face a day of disruption after ver.di extended its security staff warning strike into its second day.

Fraport, the operator of Frankfurt airport, has advised all passengers due to fly on Tuesday to not come to the airport, with only transit travellers expected to be processed. In Hamburg, the strike is particularly disruptive, coming in the middle of the school holidays. 

Stuttgart and Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden are trying to maintain as many flights as possible, but warned that passengers would face long delays at security control points. All passengers have been urged to check the status of their flights before making their way to the airport. 

Ver.di dispute with aviation companies continues

The initial strike on Monday saw dozens of planes cancelled across the country as passenger, personnel and freight control workers went on strike. The industry estimates that tens of thousands of passengers were unable to fly. 

Monday’s walkouts at the airports in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Cologne / Bonn, Hanover, Leipzig / Halle and Bremen have now come to an end, but passengers are being told to still expect delays. 

The strikes are part of an ongoing dispute between the union and the Federal Association of Aviation Security Companies. Ver.di is pushing for the salaries of 25.000 security workers to be increased, but has so far been unsuccessful across three rounds of negotiations.
