Despite some problems with supply bottlenecks, Germany is continuing to vaccinate tens of thousands of people against COVID-19 every day. The Federal Ministry of Health has put together a “vaccination dashboard” to provide a broad overview of progress. 

1.297.430 vaccinations since December 27

Since the vaccination programme began at the end of December, Germany has vaccinated 1.297.430 people against coronavirus, as of January 20. On December 29, the number was 41.962. According to the Ministry of Health, currently someone in Germany is vaccinated against coronavirus every 1,4 seconds.

50 to 60 million need to be vaccinated for herd immunity

The aim is to vaccinate around 60 to 70 percent of the population against the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen in order to achieve so-called herd immunity and prevent the further spread of the virus. Germany has a population of around 83 million, which corresponds to roughly 50 to 60 million people. Each person needs two jabs, around three weeks apart, to achieve maximum immunity.
