This summer, the city of Munich will transform itself into a funfair of culture, sports, markets, food, beer and thrilling rides. Summer in the City, taking place in various locations across Munich, aims to celebrate the joy of life by providing a variety of activities fit for all to partake in.

What to expect at Summer in the City?

Coronavirus restrictions implemented in Bavaria have cancelled all major events in the region until October, meaning that some of our favourite events including Oktoberfest, Jakobidult and Tollwood Summer Festival have been cancelled.

In an attempt to help fairground traders, market clerks, restaurateurs and cultural workers who have been affected by these regulations – and to create an alternative for visitors and guests (and boost the economy) – the City of Munich has collaborated with associations, clubs and private organisers to create “Summer in the City”.

Here are some of the main events taking place in the city:

1. Rides and attractions

Thrilling and exciting rides will be available throughout the city for the enjoyment of kids and adults alike. This includes a Willenborg Ferris wheel, the Rio Rapidos, the Jumanji running shop, the Heidi The Coaster roller coaster, the Bayern Tower, the Rainbow Star children’s carousel and Break Dance No. 1.

2. Cultural events

There will be a summer stage at the Munich Olympic Stadium, meaning that visitors can look forward to six weeks of concerts, shows, cabaret and other events from various organisers all over Munich. There are also other stages, such as the Valentin-Karlstadt-Musäum, the courtyard of the German Theater and the Celibidacheforum des Gasteigs.

The city youth welfare office also organises a number of cultural events and mobile play activities for children, youth and adults, along with music and dance for the youngsters.

3. Markets

The Dult lovers out there haven’t been forgotten! The Association of Market Merchants and Showmen have organised a market programme at four locations in Munich – Mariahilfplatz, Orleansplatz, Weißenburger Platz and Wittelbacherplatz.

These markets display a wide array of shopping products and offers, from traditional clothing to dishes, as well as some of the delicious regional delicacies of Bavaria. In addition, there are five special markets for artisans between Odeonsplatz and Max-Joseph-Platz, displaying a variety of handicraft goods.

4. Beer gardens

Keeping the atmosphere of a traditional folk festival, over 20 beer gardens flaunt some of their best beer – whether it be German or international.

5. Sports

A variety of sports-related events also find their place in the programme of Summer in the City. The “Fit in the Park” initiative takes place in four parks across the city, where you can simply drop in for a session of yoga, meditation or fitness power. In addition, the Theresienwiese offers a free mix of trend and team sports, while the Gastieg will be transformed into an open air sports field for parkour and wall tramp.
