Leipzig Christmas Markets
One of the oldest and perhaps most romantic Christmas markets in Germany is situated right in the heart of Leipzig’s old town. The Leipzig Christmas Market features around 300 traditional and festively decorated stands, where vendors offer everything from regional culinary delights to handmade gifts, ensuring it is an ever-popular winter wonderland.
Christmas market in the middle of a historic town
Brass band concerts on the main market square and visits from Santa Claus himself help spread the Christmas cheer far and wide in Leipzig in the run-up to the national holiday. The large Christmas tree, which towers over the entire Christmas market, draws in crowds, together with the historic carousel which is more than 100 years old.
Over by St. Nicholas Church Square, the Christmas market boasts plenty of handmade decorations from the Ore Mountains and unconventional ceramics. The main feature, however, is the famous Ore Mountain pyramid, which invites visitors to have a round of Feuerzangenbowle, a classic German fire punch.
Enjoy a fairytale Christmas at Leipzig Christmas markets
The historic market by Naschmarkt behind the Old Town Hall creates a nostalgic atmosphere, in which visitors can lose themselves strolling between the stalls and enjoying mugs of hot mulled wine and Bratwurst. Known for its focus on old, traditional arts and crafts, this market offers plenty of opportunity for visitors to watch glassblowers, metalsmiths and artisans create their beautiful wares.
If you want to enjoy Christmas in a more traditional setting, then the Advent market at Gohlis Palace - one of the many palaces in Germany - offers a varied cultural programme of events that is ideal for the whole family. To really get in the mood for the holiday, why not enjoy a piano concert, advent reading or Christmas opera at the palace after having a leisurely walk through the festively decorated Christmas market?
