DWD issues weather warnings and tornado risk alert
Tempestuous summer weather is set to continue in Germany this weekend, with muggy heat and stormy skies.
While intermittent sunshine and temperatures of between 27 to 32 degrees celsius are forecast across Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne, Dresden and Berlin throughout Saturday, stormy weather from France will begin its approach on the evening of June 29.
The DWD has warned that locals in Baden can expect hailstones of up to 5 centimetres and between 30 and 50 litres of rainfall per square metre in a few hours. A few tornados cannot be ruled out, the forecaster said.
By June 30, rainy, cloudy and cooler weather will be felt across much of the country, with 20 degrees forecast for Berlin, 19 for Munich and 16 in Cologne and Hamburg.
Stormy weather causes travel disruption in northern Germany
Storms in northern Germany on Thursday and Friday already led to long-distance trains between Bremen and Hamburg being disrupted, while the route has now been reopened, passengers have been told to expect delays.
Heavy rainfall in Detmold, North Rhine-Westphalia saw 100 litres per square metre fall within a short period, 9 litres more than the amount that fell on the entire state throughout April 2024.
With thousands heading out to watch Germany play Denmark at the BVB Stadion in Dortmund, it is advisable to check transport connections and possible delays in the region during the weekend.
