Berlin opens new Christmas market at Cold War listening station
If there’s anything Berlin needs more of it’s Christmas markets. Berliners are in luck; this year sees a new spot opening at the top of Teufelsberg, set among the remains of the hill’s famous Cold War-era listening station.
At the market’s various stalls, visitors can browse artworks and pick up all of the classic tasty Christmas market treats while enjoying one of Berlin’s few views, across the treetops of Grünewald.
Until January 1 the market runs Thursdays through Sundays from 11am, and visitors will be charged 10 euros for entrance.
Teufelsberg was originally the site of a Nazi military-technical college, which was buried by the party and eventually covered in more than 75 million cubic metres of rubble by the Allies in the post-war era.
Between 1961 and 1990 the hill housed a listening station for the US National Security Agency (NSA) to eavesdrop on the East German government. The site was then closed until 2016 when it was reopened for the public to explore.
Children can craft at Teufelsberg Christmas market
Organisers of the new Christmas market have encouraged families to visit, highlighting that a historic swing ride will be at the site.
If visitors are looking to warm up, there will also be an indoor area where adults and children alike can enjoy a craft session.
