Another New Year coming with a resolution to move more? French sports chain Decathlon has announced that it will open 60 additional shops in Germany by the end of 2027.
Decathlon announces major expansion in Germany
The French sportswear and equipment brand Decathlon has announced it will open 60 more shops across Germany. There are currently already 86 shops in the federal republic.
“By the end of 2027 there will be more than 150 [shops],” Arnaud Sauret, boss at Decathlon Germany told the dpa. Investment in the new shops and modernising existing locations is expected to cost the international company 100 million euros.
Where will the new German Decathlon shops be?
Decathlon’s existing shops are often in warehouses or retail parks outside city centres, but now the company is moving into town.
Speaking to the dpa, Decathlon’s expansion boss Stefan Kaiser said the company wanted to take advantage of Germany’s increasingly empty high streets and inner city shopping areas. “There are many buildings that just stand empty. Those present an opportunity for us,” Kaiser said.
Having opened a new location at Potsdam Bahnhofspassagen on November 23 and in central Hamburg on December 14, the company is now in discussion for shops in Nuremberg, Freiburg, Rostock, Oberhausen and Kassel.
An additional shop in Munich specialising in mountaineering equipment is also planned. The location of the other 52 additional shops is yet unknown.
