Christmas trees will be more expensive in Germany in 2024
Buying a Christmas tree in Germany will be slightly more expensive in 2024 compared to last year, the Association of Christmas Tree Producers has reported.
Christmas trees go up in price
The nationwide cost of buying a Christmas tree is expected to rise by one euro per tree in 2024, according to representative of the Association of Christmas Tree Producers in Schleswig-Holstein, Jörg Engler.
Nordmann fir trees will cost between 22 and 30 euros per metre, one euro more than in 2023. A European / Norway spruce tree is expected to cost between 11 and 16 euros per metre. Due to rising wages and production costs, Engler said he expects the trees to only get more expensive in the coming years.
Between 23 and 25 million Christmas trees are grown across around 30.000 hectares in Germany each year, while additional trees are imported from Denmark and Poland.
How to get rid of your Christmas tree properly in Germany
When the Christmas season has been and gone, one way to avoid increasing costs next year is to replant your fir in the garden or Kleingarten. If properly watered, a potted Christmas tree can stay alive over multiple Christmases.
If you have no space to keep your tree alive, make sure to dispose of it properly by checking Christmas tree collection dates and locations or donating your tree to the zoo for animal feed.
