Following Monday's stormy weather across western and northern Germany, passengers should expect train service disruption into January 7.

DB warns of train disruption in western and northern Germany

A Deutsche Bahn spokesperson has warned that passengers should expect train disruptions on January 7, 2025, while the rail operator continues a clean-up following storms in western and northern Germany.

While most services are now running, delays and disruptions are expected on the ICE between Berlin and Hamburg. On January 6 the route was entirely blocked after a tree fell on the track between Ludwigslust and Wittenberge. The line re-opened at 11.30pm on Monday, but is still only operating on a single track.

Another tree on the track between Siegen and Wetzlar means the IC train between Münster-Dortmund-Frankfurt and Stuttgart will also see disruptions and delays on Tuesday.

Regional trains impacted by Monday’s inclement weather, including the RE6 (Hamburg-Altona-Sylt), RE7 (Flensburg / Kiel Hbf-Hamburg Hbf) and RE70 (Kiel Hbf-Hamburg Hbf), are now running as normal.

DWD forecasts more wind and snow

While disruptions ease, the German Weather Service (DWD) has forecast more strong winds and snow for the federal republic on January 7.

Gale force winds of 85 kilometres per hour are forecast for Germany’s Baltic and North Sea coastlines, while rain is likely to fall on central parts of the country and snow is expected on land 400 to 700 meters above sea level.

Across January 8 and 9, temperatures will drop to -6 degrees celsius in the Brocken mountain region, while most northern cities will see temperatures of around 5 degrees and highs of 10 degrees around Munich and Nuremberg.
