Autumn festival in Heidelberg

Attracting 100.000 visitors each year from across Germany, the Heidelberg Autumn Festival has been taking place in the historical city since 1970. As the Heidelberg Autumn festival is set to mark its 50th anniversary this September, this year’s event will offer visitors a couple of surprises.

Taking place at the end of September each year, the street event has expanded to Bergheim in recent years, taking over additional venues such as the Cultural and Creative Department Dezernat 16, the old indoor swimming pool and the community college.

Family fun all weekend long

An arts and crafts market is set up along the main street of the city, while the flea market which runs through the small old town streets and on the banks of the Neckar remains a popular attraction. Local vendors set up stalls on the main street as well, offering regional specialities and more for visitors to sample.

A medieval market is erected on the University Square for the duration of the weekend, with activities and entertainment for all. Music of all kinds can be found in nearly every public place, with stages set up in the city squares and streets. Live music starts as early as 11 am, while come nightfall the old part of the city becomes a huge, open-air concert.
