Aliens, monsters, superheroes and mythical beasts all take to the skies this September 21, 2024 at the Festival of Giant Kites in Berlin.

Festival of Giant Kites (Festival der Riesendrachen)

Incredible kites from all across Europe will gather for one day only on Tempelhofer Feld to provide an airborne spectacle for visitors. The kites can be as big as 40 metres long, and are each completely unique. Around 1.500 different kites will be flown throughout the day!

Championship stunt-flyers will demonstrate their skills with steerable kites, and visitors are also welcome to bring along their own small kites to join in the fun. Kites will also be on sale at the festival, so if you get the bug, you can buy one and join in right away.

Entertainment for the family

There is also plenty going on down on the ground to keep the kids happy. There will be a kite-making workshop, a bouncy castle and face painting to occupy them, as well as demonstrations from sports clubs and musical interludes.

The themed display of giant kites this year is of superheroes, with characters such as Super Mario, Superman and Batman expected to make an appearance and guaranteed to please the little ones.

Tempelhofer Feld

Tempelhofer Feld is the large park on the site of the old Tempelhof Airport. It's Berlin's largest city park and one of the largest inner-city open spaces in the world.

The airport was the first commercial airport in the world, and played a key role in the largest air supply operation in human history, organised in order to break the Berlin blockade in 1948-1949. Fittingly for a festival of large inflatables, it was also the site of the world's first rigid airship flight.

Nowadays, it's popular whatever the weather, as a place to come for a summer picnic or a winter's walk in the snow.

Attending the Festival of Giant Kites

Tempelhofer Feld is easily accessible by public transport. The kite flying takes place in the western end of the park, so arriving by bus at Tempelhofer Damm, or by train or metro into U-Bahn station Paradestraße or S- and U-Bahn station Tempelhof is best.

The event is free to attend and no tickets are needed. You can find out more about the location and times of the event on the Berlin City website.
