Christmas Market Rothenburg
The nights are getting longer and colder, which means one thing - the return of the Rothenburg Christmas market! Every Advent season sees the medieval town of Rothenburg transformed into a winter fairytale wonderland.
A Christmas market with a medieval twist
With roots going back to the 15th century, the historic Rothenburg Reiterlesmarkt Christmas market is said to be among the most beautiful and romantic in Germany, thanks to its 42 towers, half-timbered houses with red-tiled roofs and cobblestone streets. Enjoy some regional specialities, like a mug of ‘white’ wine, an original Rothenburg snowball or a grilled sausage as you take a wander through the enchanting stalls.
In-keeping with the medieval spirit of the town, visitors can expect to find everything from old German Christmas pastries to handmade holiday decorations, as well as unique souvenirs. Visitors to the Christmas market can also enjoy a spectacular view over the town and Reiterlesmarkt from the town hall tower on Fridays and Saturdays.
Christmas tradition going back to the 15th century
One of the main highlights of the Christmas market in Rothenburg is the arrival of Rothenburger Reiterle (rider) at the opening ceremony. The rider, who gives the market its name, was believed to be a messenger from another world, who passed through the ether with the souls of the deceased during wintertime.
Over the centuries, the image of this rider figure has changed into that of a friendly bringer of good tidings, and both young and old look forward to seeing its appearance ahead of the national holiday.
