Experience the best festive cheer in Berlin

You can expect to find traditional as well as modern Christmas markets dotted throughout Berlin, with plans for all the participating markets to open by November 25.

Known for being among the most famous and beautiful in Germany, Berlin's holiday markets give visitors plenty of opportunities to marvel at glassblowers, traditional delicacies and handicrafts. Sip on some mulled wine or enjoy a German beer while strolling through the cosy ambience created by thousands of fairy lights. With a wide variety of Christmas markets all over the city, Berlin offers something for all different kinds of visitors.

Berlin's best places to find a cosy Christmas atmosphere

This year's largest Christmas market will take place in Spandau's old town, inside the Zitadelle Spandau. The intricate architecture, cobblestone streets and small alleys nearby add to the cute and cosy atmosphere everyone wants to be surrounded by at Christmas! Along with the landmark of a magnificent fir tree decorated in all its festive glory, there is also a Christmas nativity scene with live animals!

Alternatively, head to the Gendarmenmarkt, one of the most beautiful squares in Berlin, to sample one of the city's finest Christmas markets, complete with decorations, food and entertainment. The market in front of the Rotes Rathaus, famous for its gleaming Ferris wheel, is also one of the city's most popular. For more of a funfair atmosphere, head across the square to the market on Alexanderplatz.

If you'd prefer a smaller market with a more intimate atmosphere, the Lucia Market at the Kulturbrauerei, and the Advent Market at Domäne Dahlem, offer a unique experience for the whole family. There's also an LGBTQ+ Christmas market on Nollendorfplatz, offering up a colourful stage programme, Christmas carols karaoke and a selection of veggie- and vegan-friendly Christmas delicacies.

Visiting Berlin’s beautiful Christmas markets

With so many Christmas markets to visit, we recommend travelling by public transport - that way you can enjoy all the mulled wine you want! But remember to dress warmly, as the weather can change and temperatures drop at night.
