Cyclists are getting their own roundabout in Berlin

Yes, you read that right. A roundabout. For cyclists. In Berlin! The new structure will separate cyclists from drivers and connect Köpenick and Marzahn.

Berlin’s new cycle-about

On Tuesday, the Berlin Senate presented the details of its plans for the new roundabout connection. The Tangentiale Verbindung Ost (TVO) will separate cyclists and pedestrians from other traffic. While cars pass each other on two different levels below, cyclists and pedestrians get to cross the intersection on a raised, circular bridge.

The TVO will be installed at the junction between Friedrichsfelde, Alt-Biesdorf and Märkische Allee. The connection will run between autobahn B1 / B5 in the North and An der Wuhlheide in the South, just before the Wilhem Spindler bridge. It will be approximately 7,2km long.

The connection will take traffic from between Marzahn-Hellersdorf and Treptow-Köpenick and connect it with the A113 and the new airport, Berlin Brandenburg Airport. This should help relieve congestion in the surrounding districts. Construction should start in 2024.
