BVG announces relaunch of Berlin’s 29-euro monthly transport ticket

Berlin’s local public transport association has announced that the citywide 29-euro ticket will go on sale again in 2024. According to Berliner Morgenpost, the cost of a ticket in the AB zone hasn't been so little since 1972.

29-euro ticket will relaunch in Berlin

BVG, the local transport association in Berlin, has announced that its 29-euro ticket will go on sale again in 2024. So far, only a provisional relaunch date of July 1, 2024 has been announced.

The monthly ticket, which gives anyone unlimited access to public transport in the AB zone (the zone covering all of the inner city and most of suburban Berlin) was originally introduced in October 2022. The ticket was available until April 2023, shortly after which the 49-euro Deutschlandticket became available for purchase. Since the Deutschlandticket offers monthly access to public and regional transport all over the country for 49 euros per month, the 29-euro ticket became somewhat obsolete for many passengers.

Now, with the fate of the Deutschlandticket hanging in the balance - federal and state governments in Germany have not yet agreed on how the Deutschlandticket will be funded in the next years - Berlin’s BVG has stepped in to offer Berliners the more localised but similarly affordable ticket once again.

As with the Deutschlandticket, once a launch date is set in stone for the second coming of the 29-euro ticket, it will likely go on advance sale a month or a few weeks before it becomes valid.

AB ticket will be available with a subscription only

Again, like the Deutschlandticket, it will only be possible to buy the 29-euro ticket by taking out a subscription. In the case of the 29-euro ticket, the minimum subscription period is 12 months.

Though a big commitment for some, anyone who does choose to sign up will feel a lighter pinch when it comes to BVG price hikes, which are also scheduled for next year. From 2024, tickets for a single ride in the AB zone will go up in price from 3,20 to 3,50 euros. This means you’ll only need to use the U-Bahn or S-Bahn nine times in one month for the 29-euro subscription to be worth it.
