Passengers travelling through Berlin BER airport on July 19 have been affected by a worldwide IT outage linked to Windows PCs, which has grounded planes and severely disrupted luggage services.

BER airport severely disrupted amid Microsoft outage

BER came to a standstill on Friday morning following a worldwide IT outage. Planes were grounded, unable to depart or arrive at the airport.

Amid the chaos, employees at BER were forced to unload checked baggage from the planes, which passengers had to collect from the baggage belt and check-in a second time.

IT outages have been reported across the world on Friday morning. From Amsterdam to Brisbane airports, trains, self-checkout machines, media broadcasters and banks have been affected. 

Claiming that problems with its operating system began around 11 pm (CET) on Thursday, Microsoft has said that it is taking “mitigating actions” and investigating issues with cloud services in the US.

Chaos expected to pass by 10am in Berlin

Speaking to rbb, a representative from BER said that airport services, departures and arrivals should be back up and running by 10am on July 19. 

Passengers travelling to and from the airport should consult their airline and prepare for delays.
