Which MBA degree is the right choice for your ambitions and career path?
Investing in your personal development and education could be the right move to position yourself well for new opportunities and to future-proof your career. However, once you decide to undertake a Master of Business Administration (MBA), there are still plenty of choices on the market.
Not only do you need to consider which business school best suits your skills, interests and ambitions, but there’s also a whole variety of different types of MBA programs and specialisations for you to consider. Here are some pros and cons of the most common course types:
Full-time MBA
The full-time MBA is exactly what it says on the tin: a one or two-year course that lets you immerse yourself fully into the study experience. Outside your studies, you won’t have a great deal of time left over for working, travelling or leisure time, as you will attend classes and work on case studies and assignments.
In Europe, most full-time courses are 12 months, not giving you time for an internship but, on the plus side, it means you are only out of the job market for a relatively short period of time.
Part-time MBA
A part-time study plan provides you with greater flexibility and the chance to continue your day job alongside your studies, as classes are usually held on weekends or in modules. Part-time courses can be as long as two or three years - the flexibility of the courses makes them appealing but this is also a long time to have to commit to both your job and your studies.
Online MBA
In recent years, many business schools have responded to student demands and new digital possibilities and begun to offer online courses. Whilst at one time an online degree might have been considered less prestigious, nowadays they are increasingly seen as an impressive example of commitment. Students need to have a high level of self-discipline and time management to complete their degree successfully.
Executive MBA
The EMBA is essentially a part-time MBA program, delivered over 12 to 24 months, but aimed at a more senior audience. The minimum requirements are therefore often more advanced: up to five years of managerial experience and 10 years of work experience, on average.
An EMBA program is designed to meet the tight time constraints of its candidates by providing great networking and studying potential in compact teaching units. Often participants receive financial support from their employers.
